While employed at Hyland, Ruddy & Garbett, P.A. Steve was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant by the State of South Carolina. After living in Mt. Pleasant for a couple of years, Steve decided to move back closer to home and took a position with the accounting firm of Griffin, Beach & Company, P.A. in Walterboro, South Carolina where he provided a host of accounting services including the audit of Governmental Organizations, general accounting services, business consulting and the preparation of Individual, Partnership and Corporate income tax returns. Steve eventually opened his own accounting firm in 1996 where he continued to practice until he graduated from law school in 2008.

Steve’s legal journey began when he received his Juris Doctor degree from the Charleston School of Law in December of 2008. After graduating from law school, Steve accepted an Associate position with Parker Law Group, LLP, f/k/a Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick, P.A., working out of the Walterboro office. While practicing at Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick, P.A., Steve had the opportunity to work with some of the most experienced and outstanding attorneys in the State. His law practice included representing clients in personal injury cases including car wrecks, trucking cases, slip and fall injuries, dog bites, adulterated food cases, and injuries from defective products. Steve also handled wrongful death cases, business litigation matters, contractual disputes, and multiple probate matters. Steve tried several cases to verdict in State Court and successfully mediated many other cases, significantly benefiting his clients. In 2022 after his son Matthew graduated from law school and completed his clerkship, Steve and his son opened Murdaugh Law Group, LLC in Walterboro, South Carolina. In 2024, Steve’s second son Brian graduated law school and completed his clerkship and joined Murdaugh Law Group, LLC.

In addition to his legal acumen, Steve is deeply involved in his community further demonstrating his commitment to service both inside and outside the courtroom. After graduating from The Citadel Steve served his country as a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard where he became a Signal Corps Officer. In 1999, Steve was elected to Colleton County Council where he continues to serve in his seventh term. Steve has served as Chairman to County Council for several years during his 26 years of service. Steve has served as a director on numerous boards and commissions including The Walterboro-Colleton County Airport Commission, Lowcountry Council of Governments, Lowcountry Community Action Agency, Colleton County Habitat for Humanity, and Colleton Preparatory Academy, Inc. Steve is currently serving as a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Southern Carolina Economic Development Alliance, the Colleton County Citadel Club and the Salkehatchie Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Steve’s greatest joy other than serving his community is spending time with his family and working on the family farm.
